Splash plays for days. Melchionni is an on-ball terror, particularly with his ability to take the ball away in a variety of ways. He has an unbelievable stick and is automatic off the ground. Even when he gets beat, the Maverik Showtime and One Percent All-Star recovers with his stick in front of him to help him stay on the ball or throw one of the many, many checks in his bag. He earned a ton of playing time for perennial powerhouse Delbarton this year, and he’s as two-handed as it gets, particularly for a pole. He’ll need to bulk up to handle the rigors of college lacrosse, but he’s savvy and runs very well in the open field.

Melchionni is no stranger to this space, but when you continually produce the way he has, it’s hard not to talk about you. Spot the ball and chances are good that you’ll find Melchionni hovering around it. He’s an on-ball pest that can throw checks and handle the ball with either hand, and he has a knack for making sure that his checks land where he wants them to land. Melchionni’s motor never quits and he made a ton of splash plays all over the field for Leading Edge. He’s as good a takeaway artist as there is in this class and he runs very well in transition.

Still trying to figure out whether Melchionni is a lefty or a righty because his stickwork with either hand is THAT good. The Green Wave sophomore is an elite on-ball pest with a knack for taking the ball away on seemingly every possession. He’s tenacious, persistent and aggressive, and ground anywhere in his zip code are his. Like a lot of LSMs these days, he can be a bit of a gambler when he goes for a flashy check, but the rewards far outweigh the risks with him. If he can add some size, he’ll be special.

One Percent Showcase Fall 2020 Evaluation

Melchionni does everything that a top-flight LSM does. He’s a big takeaway guy who doesn’t miss on ground balls, runs the field like a deer and hustles all the time. He makes a ton of little plays – and big plays, for that matter – and was also rewarded for his stick skills by one-timing a rebound home like a hockey player.
