It’s not a real MIAA playoff if Boys’ Latin (Md.) and McDonogh (Md.) don’t face off against one another. It’s no surprise, then, to see that the Lakers and Eagles will square off Friday night for the title.
Senior midfielder George Insley (Crabs / Richmond) broke a tie late in the third quarter as part of his hat trick and added an insurance marker less than three minutes later to lead the Lakers to a 13-9 win over Gilma (Md.) in the first game of the night. Four-star senior Liam White (Ohio State) also tallied a hat trick for Boys’ Latin. Five-star senior Spencer Ford (Crabs / Maryland) and five-star junior Matty Higgins (Team 91 Long Island / West Coast Starz / Maryland) both netted a pair of goals in the win. Higgins also racked up four assists.
Five-star goalie Aidan Seibel (Team 91 Maryland / Maryland) was a rock in the cage, including some big-time late saves, to help the two-time defending champion Eagles continue their quest for a threepeat. Four-star seniors Ben Firlie (Team 91 Maryland / Georgetown) and Luke Miller (Notre Dame) each had two goals and an assist for McDonogh. The Eagles also got a goal and two assists from No. 1 junior Brendan Millon (Team 91 Maryland / Virginia) and two goals from sophomore lefty Hunter Metz (Crabs).
Another Year, Another Playoff Battle
Boys’ Latin and McDonogh have met in the MIAA playoffs every year, other than one, since 2010. The Eagles beat the Lakers on McCabe Millon‘s overtime winner in last year’s semifinal. Brendan Millon’s dramatic, controversial goal pushed McDonogh past BL two years ago in the semifinals. Boys’ Latin’ last playoff win over the Eagles came in 2021, a one-goal win in the semifinals before the Lakers took out Archbishop Spalding for the league crown.
